Igbo statue, Nigeria Wood, pigments H. 92... - Lot 76 - De Baecque et Associés
Igbo statue, Nigeria Wood, pigments H. 92 cm Provenance : Paul and Jacqueline Canfère Collection acquired from Jean-Michel Huguenin (according to oral information from descendants). Traditionally kept in a sanctuary dedicated to the ancestors, Igbo statues - statues of ancestors - represented one of the founders of the clan or a tutelary deity called alusi. It is through their gestures of imploring the sky, with their hands turned towards it, that they were recognized. On this example, if one of them has disappeared, the other hand presents this characteristic, testifying to and evoking the generosity of the deities as well as their desire to receive offerings. Imposing figure, the body in places enhanced with white, black, ochre and yellow pigments. Naturalism of the anatomical details, notably the nipples and the umbilicus. The movement of the bulging torso accentuated by the slightly recessed drooping shoulders. Elegance of the sophisticated headdress represented in the form of a helmet whose deeply engraved border is enhanced with black pigments, and the whitened top. The age of the headdress is attested by the superimposed layers of kaolin coating.
