Moba statue, Togo Wood H. 52 cm In a landmark... - Lot 74 - De Baecque et Associés
Moba statue, Togo Wood H. 52 cm In a landmark article that appeared in 1987 in the journal African Arts, ethnologist Christine Muellen Kreamer established the function and use of Moba statues. According to her, they were intended to reinforce the effectiveness of the altars by invoking the positive influence of the ancestors on the lives of mortals. In June 1991, Pierre Amrouche organized the first catalogued exhibition in Paris on Moba art. This is a beautiful small example, with eroded wood, a shiny brown patina, and an imposing ovoid head. The shoulders and pectoral muscles linked to the filiform arms in a block in slight relief, delicately curved over the cylindrical bust, confer a presence, a proud and sure allure to the character standing on small legs.
