Mandjong coin, Kwele, Gabon Iron, cast iron H. 50 cm Provenance : Paul and Jacqueline Canfère Collection acquired from Jean-Michel Huguenin (according to oral information from descendants). The anchor-shaped coin, called mandjang, was introduced at the beginning of the 20th century by the merchants of the N'Goko Sangha company in order to acquire ivory. Used, according to the writings of Jane Guyer, until very recently in the Ogoué basin to buy wives (The Iron currencies of Southern Cameroon, Cambridge: 1985). Beautiful specimen, presenting an oxidation, rust with red, orange tonalities variations.
