Zande harp, Democratic Republic of Congo Wood,... - Lot 61 - De Baecque et Associés
Zande harp, Democratic Republic of Congo Wood, skin L. 63 cm Provenance : Private collection, France Illustration of the aesthetic refinement of instruments in Africa, sublimely married artistic expressions, harps skilfully combine plasticity and music, while being a marker, an indicator of social belonging. Traditionally belonging to itinerant musicians, they could also be the prerogative of young people of high lineage. Although widespread in Central Africa, they were not discovered until later because of the difficult and dangerous access routes, especially those from the east into the interior occupied by the Zande and Mangbetu. For each object, whether for everyday use or for worship, weapons or tools, the Zande were concerned with aesthetic detail and ornamentation. The human figure was widely imposed as the favorite subject of ornamentation. The artistic aesthetics incensed and answered faithfully to the tradition, the head in these societies was, from the youngest age, in the newborns compressed until he knew how to sit and stand straight. The face thus turned out to be stretched́ in height until the eyes were bridled. This practice thus allowed for elaborate hairstyles. This superb harp, is the symbolic witness of this ancestral tradition. Elegance and finesse of the features of the face with eyes in relief delicately stretched, topped by a sophisticated cap headdress, consisting of triangular patterns in slight relief stretched to the top, marked by two small buns.
