*Three clubs, one Kayapo, Amazonia, one Kanak,... - Lot 12 - De Baecque et Associés
*Three clubs, one Kayapo, Amazonia, one Kanak, New Caledonia, and one Papua New Guinea Wood L. 109 cm, 107 cm and 112 cm Provenance : Private collection, Switzerland The name Kayapo is foreign to the language of the tribes that bear it, according to Simone Dreyfus (Les Kayapo du Nord, State of Para, Brazil, 1963, p.14), "of unknown origin". It refers to a people spread over a vast region covering the south of the state of Goias, the southeast of Mato Grosso, the northwest of São Paulo. Their art was restricted to body painting, basketry and jewelry making, and found its means of expression in their weapons, as shown by the beautiful example on display. The Kanak club presented here has a phallic shape, the cylindrical grip is on its upper end, at the level of the head engraved with a succession of fine incisions bearing the same repetitive motif, giving the whole a delicate ornament while being at the same time sophisticated. Very nice bright light patina with tonal variations on the apparent veins. For a similar work belonging to André Breton (lot 6108, Breton sale, 2003). Lot in temporary importation and subject to a 5,5 % fee to be paid by the buyer in addition to the selling expenses and the hammer price.
