BARON Alphonse BALLEYDIER Collection of about 170 handwritten letters from Baron Alphonse Balleydier, all addressed to his brother Augustin Balleydier, a French botanist living in Paris or London; the latter made this work after the death of his brother Alphonse. These letters are bound in a book and are glued together at the edges with two strips of paper. The last two pages of this book are the telegram announcing the death of Alphonse Balleydier on 11/11/1859 and his death notice dated Lyon on 12/11/1859. Alphonse Balleydier Baron of the Austro-Hungarian Empire (born and died in Lyon 1810-1859) was a man of letters, historian and historiographer (because he wrote the history of the sovereigns). He wrote many works among which: the Political History of the Revolution of Rome from 1646 to 1850, the History of the Revolutions of the Empire of Austria, the History of the Hungarian War. Following these last two works, the Emperor of Austria named him Baron of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Most of the texts are signed Alphonse or sometimes Alphonse Balleydier or Baron Balleydier. There are many family passages, in June 1844 he speaks about the illness of his father. He also talks with his brother about his works and publications, subscriptions for his works, family disputes, financial problems. In June 1848 he sends to his brother, on a paper with the colonel's letterhead, a copy of Colonel Vernon's order of the day in which this military officer speaks about the misery of the workers and in which he takes their defense. During this revolt from June 22 to 26, 1848, Parisian workers revolted following the closing of the national workshops and more than 4000 workers were killed. There is also an anonymous letter that threatens him with death. In 1848 a letter of marriage proposal to an Englishwoman Miss Schmidt transmitted through her brother in London. Letter from Rome in 1850 where he speaks about the presence of the French army. There are several letters from Belgium and the Netherlands where he has an audience with King William III. There are also several letters from London where he talks about his work and his business and relationships. In 1851 there is a breach of a marriage contract with Miss Aubrée, the latter not wanting to marry anymore. In 1856 there are two letters from Prussia and seven from Saint Petersburg in Russia. His journey continues in 1857 in Austria and Hungary. From the postal point of view, we find in this collection of letters of Mr. Alphonse Balleydier, many taxed letters from Lyon or Paris between 1844 and 1859. There are also a few franked letters from France including two rarer ones from Lyon dated 23/03/1854 and 14/04/1854 each franked with a n°15 of France 25 and blue Empire type, both with their margins. There is also a letter from Belgium. Then there are several with the n°8 20 and red Medallion type from Belgium. Then there are several letters from Russia and Austria between 1856 and 1857, forwarded to France by the Embassy mail (diplomatic bag) and delivered to the post office in Paris. On the totality of these letters from Russia there is only one which is franked with a n°13 of France 10 and Empire cancelled star of Paris in June 1856, and the other letters are taxed. There are two letters from Rome and two letters from Berlin taxed and finally a front of envelope from Hungary of 1857 with stamps of Austria n°2 2 black and three n°5 9K blue cancelled from PESTH the 9/05/1857 (Budapest in Hungary).
