# BLAKE (William). ILLUSTRATIONS OF THE BOOK OF JOB invented & engraved by William Blake, 1825. London, Published as the Act Directs March 8: 1825. By William Blake N. 3 Fountain Court Strand. In folio (375 x 267 mm) of : engraved title and 21 plates, half brown basane with corners, smooth spine mute (binding of the nineteenth). Complete suite of the magnificent intaglio engravings executed by William Blake in 1826. This series, one of the most beautiful achievements of Blake in the field of art books was considered in 1857 by the art critic John Ruskin as "Of the highest rank in certain characters of imagination and expression in the mode of obtaining certain effects of light ... Blake is superior to Rembrandt! A composite copy printed on the same paper, with the words "Proof" on each engraving erased. Three of them bear the watermark "'J. Whatman Turkey Mill 1825" (14-18-20) and one the watermark "J. Whatman 1825" (5). According to Linnell, there were 150 copies with the word "Proof" and the "'J. Whatman Turkey Mill 1825" watermark printed on Indian paper, 65 "Proof" on French paper with the "J Whatman 1825" watermark, and 100 copies on drawing paper printed after the word "Proof" was removed from the lower right corner of each plate. The first plate is dated 1828 as in all copies. Russian label on the second plate. Defects to the binding with very small tears and wear.
