Italian school of the 19th century after Antonio Canova (1757-1822) Lucrezia of Este Marble bust H. H. : 26,5 cm S&C Related work: Antonio Canova, Lucretia d'Este, 1821-1822 marble bust, former collection of Baron D'Ashburton, Hôtel des Ventes de Monte-Carlo, sale on 27 April 2019. Related literature: - G. Pavanello, M. Praz, L'opera completa di Antonio Canova, Milan, Rizzoli, 1976, p.131-132,no.346. This marble bust is a copy of Antonio Canova's recently rediscovered bust of Lucrezia d'Este. Made in 1821 for the Baron of Ashburton, Canova created an idealized portrait of this female figure, daughter of Hercules II d'Este and Renee of France. Known for her great beauty, the perfection of her features is magnified here by the hairstyle raised into a crown of braids and the delicate curls framing the face.
