HELVETIUS (Claude-Adrien). DE L'ESPRIT. Paris, Durand, 1758. Printed by Moreau, printer of the Queen and of Monseigneur Le Dauphin. 4 pages, basane racine, smooth spine decorated (modern binding). Famous work, censured by the Sorbonne as containing "all the poisons scattered in the various modern books, that is to say contemporary. Dedicated to the royal family, it was rejected by the latter and on August 10th, the privilege for its publication was revoked. The book was blamed by the Clergy, the Pope and the Faculty of Theology. It was banned from sale and burned on February 10, 1759. Untrimmed copy with all its original margins and which presents the particularity of gathering 9 leaves of the first edition (EIA) and 11 of the third (E.2). Small stains on some pages, small gallery in the bottom margin on about thirty leaves. (See Smith, Bibliography of the writings of Helvétius, 2001, p.121 "Key for identifying editions and states"). Some foxing and very small gallery in the bottom margin of a few pages.
