FOSSE (Charles- Louis). IDEES OF A MILITARY... - Lot 85 - De Baecque et Associés
FOSSE (Charles- Louis). IDEES OF A MILITARY FOR THE DISPOSITION OF TROOPS entrusted to young officers in the defence and attack of small posts Paris, Alexandre Jombert, Imprimerie de Franç. Amb. Didot jeune, 1783. 2 parts of [10]-116-60-[28] pages and 11 plates, bound in 1 volume in-4°, half blond basane with corners, smooth spine decorated, red edges (later binding). First edition dedicated to the duke of Chatelet whose coloured coat of arms it bears at the head of the dedication. The text is the work of the French military engineer Charles-Louis de Fossé and is naturally divided into two sections. The first deals with the strategies to be used to attack (or defend) a small military outpost composed of 30 to 300 men; the second deals with the correct use of colour when drawing maps and military plans and is illustrated with 11 folding plates finely coloured by Louis Marin Bonnet, "the first engraver in this genre". Bonnet had developed a very elaborate technique of engraving in the pastel manner, producing colour prints of the highest quality and thus paved the way for the great French illustrated works of the late 18th century. A copy with large margins, soiling on the spine (Brunet, II, 1354). FROM THE LIBRARY OF PHILIPPE, COUNT OF SCHWERIN (bookplate stamped on title).
