FENELON (Fr. Salignac de La Motte). THE ADVENTURES OF TELEMACHUS, SON OF ULYSSE. Paris, Jacques Estienne, 1717. 2 volumes (in continuous pagination) of [4]-58-[2]-267-1bl.-[6]-269 to 526-[2] pages, bound in 1 volume in-12, mahogany morocco, inner gilt lace, spine gilt, edges gilt (L. Guétant, handwritten signature). "Of all the early editions of Télémaque printed in Paris, this is the most beautiful,... it served as a basis for the following editions" (Brunet). First complete and first illustrated edition of the adventures of Telemachus, in conformity with the original manuscript, published by the Marquis de Fénelon, grand-nephew of the author, and dedicated to Louis XV. It is the first edition in "small print". The illustration includes 2 frontispieces, the first one by Bailleul engraved by Duflos, 24 engravings out of text by Bonnart and Giffart or not signed, 1 vignette and 1 folding map of the voyages after by Rousset. This copy has been bound with silk covers protecting the engravings, 4 of which have been partially coloured. Small repair on one leaf, small hole in the margin of another.
