DUMORTOUS (Pierre). HISTOIRE DES CONQUETES DE LOUIS XV. Paris, Lormel, 1759. In-folio of [6]-6-171-[1] pages, (mis-coded 181), basane racine, gilt fillets on the boards, spine gilt, gilt edges (modern binding). Magnificent work to the glory of Louis XV relating his military achievements and the battles that were won during his reign between 1744 and 1748, both in Flanders and on the Rhine, in Germany and in Italy. It is generously illustrated with an allegorical frontispiece with the portrait of Louis XV after a drawing by Boucher engraved by Lempereur, 27 large figures representing sieges and battle scenes placed in beautiful frames, one of which is double-page, and finally 14 folding maps and plans, all finely engraved on copper by Eisen, Boquet,... Pages 93 to 96 are in duplicate. Very thin marginal gallery on qq. leaves, small marginal restorations without gravity. A fine copy. (Cohen, 177). Attached is the handwritten privilege on vellum for the work: "Registered on register 14 of the Chambre syndicale des libraires et imprimeurs de Paris... with the charge of providing the aforementioned chamber with nine copies. The Sieur Dumortous made us explain that he wished to print and give to the public the work entitled "Histoire des Conquêtes de Louis XV... We have hereby allowed him to sell and distribute it for six consecutive years... Given at Versailles on the twelfth day of January in the Year of Our Lord 1759. By the King in his council. Signed Lebègue ". It is very rare to find these 2 elements together, the book and its royal privilege, which constitutes an exceptional historical and bibliographical curiosity.
