WOVEN BOOK OF HOURS] - PRAYER BOOK WOVEN... - Lot 77 - De Baecque et Associés
WOVEN BOOK OF HOURS] - PRAYER BOOK WOVEN ON SILK based on manuscript illuminations from the 14th to 16th centuries. Lyon, Roux, 1886. In-8 square, garnet morocco, spine ribbed, 2 large silver clasps finely chased on each plate, double gilt fillet on the cups, soft blue morocco lining with a large frame formed of scrolls of burgundy morocco that cross to form cartouches decorated with bird irons with mosaic fleurs-de-lis of burgundy morocco, brocaded silk endpapers, gilt head, morocco case of the same hue lined with blue silk (Kauffmann-Petit). Rare work, printed in very small numbers, with characters and ornaments entirely woven in black on a Jacquard loom, on a silver silk background. The 50 pages of text that compose it are all decorated with large floral borders, and ornate lettering; four of them offer the reproduction of 4 large miniatures. According to Paul Marais, "The book is woven on silk on a Jacquard loom, the remarkably tight, beautiful silk fabric has 400 weft passes per inch [...]. It took more than two years to complete this prayer book. The range of tones, from pearl grey to deep black, is so varied that the text is perfectly legible and the illustrations and borders are of a remarkable finish and purity of design. In summary, this book is a very exceptional work by its execution and as a choice of engravings, ornate letters and frames. It is an extremely original attempt, whose success and perfection constitute a unique work! ONE OF THE SOME EXAMPLES OF LUXURY, richly bound, accompanied by its original silk-sheathed case. Small wear and tear on the edges of the box. (Marais, in bulletin du bibliophile, 1889 p. 163-66) (Vicar V, 342). VERY NICE COPY. *** JUDICIAL LOT, REDUCED COSTS: 11,90% EXCL. TAX ***
