Couple of Bozo puppets, Bamana, Mali H.... - Lot 152 - De Baecque et Associés
Couple of Bozo puppets, Bamana, Mali H. 53 and 54 cm The Bozo are a fishing people, living in the loop of the Niger River, not far from Mopti, alongside the Bamana. Their village associations, which are still active, compete in mask and puppet shows, as this anthropomorphic puppet couple testifies. They were originally worn on top of the dancers' heads, within an elaborate structure. These spectacular traditional danced traditional festivities were adopted by their Bamana neighbours at the end of the 19th century. Made of solid wood, these two works, with their imposing triangular torsos, are covered with red pigments. The circular eyes are set with mirrors. Long median nasal edges, small mouths with thin lips. The female figure has an imposing chest and an elaborate hairstyle. She embodies a Peul woman, another similar one had been collected by Marcel Griaule.
