Trompe/ Kuba style oliphant, Democratic Republic of Congo L. 39,5 cm In the Democratic Republic of Congo, the trunks, also called olifants, are carved from antelope horns or elephant tusks. This specimen from the north of the country allowed individuals to communicate with each other while hunting. Property of the chief, a major, external symbol of power and authority, the oliphant came into play during rituals of invocation of protective spirits. Meticulously decorated, this beautiful specimen has a magnificent patina of use and antiquity ranging from honey to shades of brown-red tones. Resculpted face. The lot will be the subject of a declaration of purchase in accordance with Article 2bis of the decree of 16 August 2016 as amended.
