Pende bearded mask, Democratic Republic of... - Lot 110 - De Baecque et Associés
Pende bearded mask, Democratic Republic of Congo H. 48,5 cm Provenance: Collection Léo Félix The giwoyo (called kiwoyo among the Eastern Pende) is one of the many mbuya masks presented at community festivals. Worn horizontally on the top of the head, it was designed to be seen from the side. The Giwoyo, characterized by their long appendages, are the rarest of the Pende corpus, and this one is distinguished by the remarkable volume of the face. He can be recognized by his long beard illustrated by a wooden neck. His face displays the classical features of the central Pende style, and in particular of the chieftaincy of Katundu, where Emil Torday collected the first Pende masks that reached Europe in 1909. Beautiful polychrome patina very well preserved. Pretty snub nose, polychrome geometric features and taut lines. The powerful dynamic is accentuated by the movement of the black and white coloured lines invading the chin, announcing the beautiful preserved fibre beard.
