Limoges, middle of the 16th century, entourage... - Lot 21 - De Baecque et Associés
Limoges, middle of the 16th century, entourage of Léonard Limosin (1505-1575/1577) Scene of the Crucifixion Painted enamels enhanced with gold on a rectangular copper plate of colors on salmon-colored counter-enamel Dimensions : 15,5 cm x 14,5 cm S&C Old restorations on the face (left angel, hand and dress of Mary Madeleine, face of the angel at the feet of Christ, right arm and dress of St. John, lower and upper corners of the right border), cracks and accidents on the reverse This delicate painted enamel plaque depicting a crucifixion scene originally came from an altarpiece composed of several scenes of the Passion of Christ. It was made by a Limousin workshop in the middle of the 16th century. The city of Limoges is a major enamel producer and one of its most illustrious practitioners is Leonardo Limosin. The work of this artist, in the service of the kings of France in particular, spread thanks to the production of a fertile workshop. It is therefore not surprising to find the influence of the master in the style of our plate. The Victoria and Albert Museum (Inv. 2037:1, 2-1855) holds a plate depicting a crucifixion scene signed by the artist and dated 1539, which shows Christ with the same exacerbated work of the linea alba of his abdomen. But also, the features of Mary Magdalene on the left of the composition are very close to those of the figures of the famous series of Sibyls by Leonardo Limosin (around 1535-1540). Her eyes, circled in black and delicately enhanced with white, accentuate the gaze, as well as her long, thin and straight nose surmounting a delicate mouth with pursed lips, are reminiscent of the Sybil Agrippa by the enameller, preserved at the Arts Décoratifs in Paris (Inv. 38072)
