LEEM (Knud). BESKRIVNING OVER FINMARKENS LAPPER deres Tungemaal, Levemaade og forrige Afgudsdyrkelse Kiøbenhavn, Trykt udi det Kongel. Mäysenhuses Bogtrykkerie af G.G. Salikath, 1767. 2 parts of [14]-20-544 and [2]-82-[2] pages, bound in 1 volume in-4°, blond leather, double cold framing on the boards, highly ornamented spine, painted edges (period binding). First edition. This is Knud Leem's most important work and topographical work; it was printed with comments by Bishop Johan Ernst Gunnerus and a large historical-religious study written by Erik Johan Jessen-Schardeböll (1705-1783), who was the general inspector of the Danish Church. Knud Leem described, in Danish and Latin, the life and lifestyles of the Lapp (Sami) people of the time, their clothing, food and cooking, hunting, fishing and sporting equipment, shamanism and folk beliefs. The 101 amazing engraved plates that accompany it form the very first documentation of the Sami culture. Scattered foxing, a few pages browned, plate 97 torn with half missing, binding worn (spotting, small tears, one hinge cracked on half. (Brunet III, 922 "Rare in France and much sought after").
