JOSEPH (Flavius). Opera Josephi viri inter... - Lot 64 - De Baecque et Associés
JOSEPH (Flavius). Opera Josephi viri inter judaeos doctissimi ac disertissimi, quae ad nostram aetatem pervenerunt, omnia, nimirum: de antiquitatibus judaicis libri XX... Cum figuris et indice. Frankfurt, Sigismund Feyerabend 1580. Strong in folio of [8]-934-2bl.- [44] pages, ivory vellum, traces of lace (binding of the time). The book opens with a beautiful frame with the title, then with the dedication of the bookseller decorated with the arms of the Duke of Saxony, a large engraved plate showing the creation of the world with Adam and Eve and finally with 97 SUPERB LARGE WOODWODS illustrating for the most part famous war scenes. It is the complete work of the Jewish historian provided by the Bohemian humanist Sigismund Gelenius and by Erasmus for the book of the Maccabees. It contains the 20 books of Jewish antiquities which are of the greatest importance for archaeology, for the study of texts as well as for the study of monuments: The War of the Jews in 7 books which report the events of the siege of Jotapat, in which the author took part; the Counter-Appion in 2 books and finally the book of the Maccabees which is a discourse on the family from which Josephe descended. AFTER THE SACRED CODES, THESE WORKS FORM THE MOST IMPORTANT TEXTS OF JUDAISM. Holes with missing words on 2 leaves (358-59). (Adams J.367).
