Edward Gordon CRAIG (1872-1966) - Lot 103
Edward Gordon CRAIG (1872-1966) Important lot de 22 L.A.S. et 8 C.A.S. en anglais, de l'année 1911 adressées à Jurgis Kasimirovitch Baltruchaïtis (1873-1944), certaines avec des dessins et projets de décor notamment pour des costumes de Léon Bakst : -Lettre du 1er mars "great desire to work out & test conclusions which I have come to. You see, the Moscow actors are splendid at interpreting the prose of life. Not the poetry. They know how to reason, not how to blossom. They know how to knit the brows, not how to loosen the leg. And this power to blossom, bubble, pour out their passion red or white, only I can teach them. That is the worst of it. I should not teach through blossoming bubbling or pouring out my own passion, because that leads only to immitation. But I would teach them which stops of the pie to cover with their fingers, which to uncover, & what music NOT to play. The art of the theatre is as easy an art to master as any other, but certain conditions of soul, body and surroundings are necessary. I wish I could write this to Stanislavsky but I cannot for I don't speak German well enough & he does not read English. But it is most important to him, to me, & most of all the theatre of Europe, & the * people of Europe that he & I work together CONTRE all the others in Europe. Ten people cannot achieve this. 5 cannot. 2 might. I will." -Lettre du 10.X "Dear B. We are going to have tea in ten minutes. What a pity you aren't here to have a cup of it & a slice of bread & jam. And then a talk about nothing - how delightful. Did you say you go to Doctors at Bern. Doctors - well good but go most to doctor Rest. & don't drink coffie : give me 2 of you r cups of coffie everyday. That still leaves you 10 cups, for every (?) is doppo. (...) I have a room still in Paris for you when you need it. When will you come to London ? I do not think it would make you happy. but it would amaze you & you would laugh at the terrible spectre - while you tightened the grip on your stick. It is only after 40 years that I begin to grow familiar with the terrific monster. How is Georgio ? Are you happier about his health ? And how madam Baltruchaïtis ? (...) My England is pretty & tidy, even the country roads are cut on each side each year so that the edge is trim & sharp. and all is small. Hence people are small inside & tidy outside (unlike G-C who is untidy in & out). I have been asked to read a paper before the Royal Society of Arts, an ancient institution. I feel very "stuck up"." -Alassio "Shall we speak for a moment about this Moscow affair. I note that little ** signs himself "Director of the Moscow Art Theatre". Is that another of thor correctisms ? It seems plain that they do not want me to finish the work I began. Why ? That seems unclear to me. A few roubles is not the reason. I think it is the ancient reason fear. A thunderstorm is raging here as I write, lightening fierce & terrible & noise & grey rain. There things always fill me with terror. But how can I fill the bosom of the dear little Moscow artistic theatre with terror os incomprehensible to me. By the way I see that poor Prezolini has been convicted. I have recieved no answer from stanislavsky. I think it is strange that when he writes to me and I answer him that I hear nothing more till a clerk sends me clerks letter of his dismissal. It is excruciatingly funny. Shall I suppose I ought to be glad that the g did not put a knife into me, or poison in my tea. Fear will give birth to any monstrosity. But Stanislavsky. Stanislavsky. I cannot understand you & the part you play in all this." -env. juin 1911 "It is very strange (& exciting) that when you left Alassio it became quite different to us all. NOt the caffè so much, not the Hotel, nor the street. but the long stretch of curved sand which led to the rocks. & we never went there quite as willingly, & never failed to look along expecting to see you. you had become like part of the nature, where the silences are the most eloquent. This remembrance males me almost able to read your poems although I do not understand a word. I wish I wish I could actually read them (...) I am sending you todays by another post a little piece of my work, a drawing which I hope will not be as talkative as I am in my letters" -Lettre Paris (juin) 1911 : dessin figurant lui et J.K. Baltruchaïtis comme des brigands se préparant à l'embuscade sur Astrue, personne qui donne du fil à retordre à Craig au sujet de son école. -Paris, juin "My school, like an egg sits under me. Soon we shall hear the cackle - & eccolo !! a goose ! if your poems are "einzige Blumen auf der dunkel(en) und weise(n) Erde" I am surprized, for you make the Earth multicoloured & full of light. How bright must the poems be to look brighter than the brightest." -24 VI, sur l'enveloppe : "I hear Stanislavsky has gone off his head. is it true ?" "he seemed (like so many Russians) delighted. It is that I like so much in them. as in Italians. as not with
