This auction, a true panorama of the history of photography in the 19th century, will be punctuated by numerous rarities such as a collection of images relating to the execution of Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico in 1867, by the photographer François Aubert (1829-1906), a beautiful suite of large-format Lumière autochromes, a rare collection of large albumen prints by the Bisson brothers, numerous prints on travel, including the rare personal album of a sailor who visited Peru in the 186s, four rare images of Sheikh Ahmadou Bamba (1853-1927), at the time of the laying of the foundation stone of the great mosque of Diourbel on March 11, 1918. The twentieth century will not be outdone, the collection Henri Lièvre (1920-2016), will illustrate the quality of Lyon photographers between a beautiful collection of prints of Blanc and Demilly and a remarkable set of prints of Rene Basset (1919-2021), Niepce prize 1958 and a whole set from the Collection Danielle Autha and Serge Negre.

Autha-Nègre Collection:

Our photographic adventure began in the 80s. Labruguière, our native village, in the South of France, celebrated its millennium in 1985. We had started a collection of old photographs and postcards and to publish a small illustrated book on this occasion seemed to us judicious. At home, it was common knowledge that a certain Arthur Batut had made photographs using a kite. We set out to find his descendants, because if this character had made photographs with a kite, no doubt he had also made on the ground. After many adventures we met Marie-Georges Lamarque who preciously kept the rich archives of his great grandfather. Very generously she proposed to give them to our Society of Archaeological and Historical Research if we kept them and exhibited them in Labruguière. Following this, Serge, an amateur of ancient techniques, brought back to the forefront the practice of aerial photography by kite. It was very useful for the explorer Jean-Louis Etienne who proposed him to join the various polar expeditions. In addition, the Éditions Milan of Toulouse agreed to publish our first book, "Labruguière at the Time of the Bandstands", enriched with many unpublished pictures of Arthur Batut. The local authorities were convinced of the interest of hosting the Batut collection, a nugget for our very ordinary village. The disused Bains Douches building was admirably renovated and the Arthur Batut Museum opened its doors in the summer of 1988.

From all sides, personalities from the world of photography helped us, Jean Dieuzaide, Yvette Troipoux, Willy Ronis, Marc Riboud, Alain Desvergnes, Sabine Weiss, Robert Doisneau, Charles-Henri Favrod, John Philips, to name but a few. They agreed to come and exhibit their work in our premises, despite our limited means. For reasons of economy, we hosted the artists in our home and they often became friends. To thank us, they offered us prints which explains these unusual dimensions.

As we are getting older, we have to dispose of a large number of our archives and the money obtained will be used to help our children.

Danielle Autha and Serge Nègre
