Hand drum, called "katunenia", Papua New Guinea. - Lot 322
Hand drum, called "katunenia", Papua New Guinea. Cylindrical drum with no ornamentation. The handle, incorporated into a protruding central ridge, concentrates the motifs characteristic of the Massim stylistic area: curvilinear motifs facing each other, with a stylized bird's head for the grip. Surprisingly sober decoration in the Massim area. At the top of the shaft, a short, perforated, projecting ridge was used to attach raffia or feather decorations. A light patina covers the wood, which has been worked to give it an elegant, smooth surface. While the mark used to stretch the skin is clearly visible, the skin is absent. Trobriand, Trobriand Islands/Kiriwina (Papua New Guinea). Dimensions: 70 cm long, 11 cm diameter.
