Antique cylindrical container, island of Borneo. - Lot 314
Antique cylindrical container, island of Borneo.
Large bamboo tube, cut from a single stem of the plant. A bamboo stopper closes the container. Two braided plant fiber rings (rattan?), one on the stopper, the other on the container itself, adorn the object. This second ring is used to attach a lanyard, also made of woven plant fibers (rattan?) and acting as a hand strap. The overall effect is one of elegant simplicity. A tanned skin (cervid?) is contained inside the tube. The overall look of the object tends to link it to the Dayak of Borneo: it is probably a quiver (for poisoned darts), a common artefact in this culture. Smooth, dark patina with traces of use and age-related cracks.
Dayak ?, Kalimatan (Borneo Island, Indonesia). On base. Dimension: 36 cm long, 7.4 cm diameter
Estimated dating: 20th century (early ? or earlier ?)
