Important embroidered birthday celebration hanging, China, mid-19th century, raspberry-red silk satin finely embroidered with gold-spun couchure and polychrome silk, mainly in impiétant past stitch and point lancé. The upper part features a calligraphic cartouche, probably eulogizing the celebrant, surmounted by a dragon framed by two phoenixes. On the main body, a group of characters and an immortal surround a mandarin holding a ruyi, with picturesque scenes on either side, notably on the theme of games and learning. In the lower part, dogs of fô in rinceaux of peonies (some small accidents, some reinforcements on the lining), 360 x 191 cm. The Minéapolis Institute of Arts holds a hanging of the same type and very similar embroidery quality (Acc. no. 55.46).
