Ôtani Kôei (1852-1923), Japan, circa 1900-1920 Ink on paper, vertical calligraphy showing in the center in large characters the mantra "Namu Amida Butsu" (mantra for Amitabha Buddha) surrounded by two thinner columns, Kôei seal at bottom left, mounted on silk in a vertical scroll, copper alloy jiku-saki, with its custom-made box (awasebako). Slight stains. H. 100.5 cm - L. 48 cm (painting only) H. 192 cm - W. 65.5 cm (overall) Ôtani Kôei was a Buddhist monk and the 22nd abbot of the great Higashi Hongan-ji temple in Kyoto, the main temple of the Ôtani-ha branch of the Jôdo-Shinshû (True School of the Pure Land).
