[Malta]. [BOISSAT (Pierre de, sieur de Licieu)]. History of the knights of the order of S. Jean de Hierusalem containing their admirable institution & police, the follow-up of the wars of the Holy Land, where they were found, & their continuous travels, undertakings, battles, assaults & meetings. Cy-devant escrite par le feu S.D.B.S.D.L. Paris, chez Jacques D'Allin, 1658-59. 3 parts bound in 1 volume in-folio of [20]-510-[24] and 249 pages mis-coded 248 and [24]-202 pages (mis-coded 196) and 28 pages, ivory vellum, boards decorated with a triple frame of gilt fillets, initials C.B. gilt in the center of the boards, spine ribbed and nicely decorated, gilt edges (B. Magnin rel.). Work largely taken from the original edition by the Italian Giacomo Bosio. Last edition translated by Jean Baudoin divided into twenty books, it is followed by an ample chronology of the lives of the Grand Masters, a summary of the privileges of the Order, and some rulings and treaties, by F.A. de Naberat. This great history is decorated with a beautiful engraved title for the first part and 2 engraved titles, 60 in-text portraits (Grand Masters) of which one is half-page, 4 in-text plans (cities of Jerusalem, Ptolemaïde, Rhodes, and Valletta), 4 full-page plans (Margat, the island of Cipre, Malta, island and seat of Malta), a folding plan of the city of Ptolemaïde, a genealogical tree in-text (proof of the nobility of the knights) for the privileges. Bound with: The statutes of the Order of St. John of Hierusalem. 1658 - Malthe suppliante au pied du Roy. A VERY GOOD copy (Hellwald, p. 28 - Brunet I, 1124).
