*Churinga board Wood, pigments H. 30 cm Chips Provenance... - Lot 42 - De Baecque et Associés
*Churinga board Wood, pigments H. 30 cm Chips Provenance : Private collection, Switzerland Aboriginal, a term derived from the Latin ab origine, meaning "from the beginning", has become the generic name for those who populate Australia. The Aboriginal people did not pray to one or more gods, did not practice sacrifice, but had however an intense religious life organized around important rituals called corroboree during which the men relived the moments of creation by incarnating themselves the fantastic beings to which their totemic group attached them individually. The churinga is a mysterious object, flat and elongated in shape, rounded or pointed at both ends, which was used during ritual dances. It was not used everywhere in Australia, but over a very large area, in the large central semi-desert region, and in the west, especially in the northwest, in the Kimberley region. Carved with mysterious motifs of a fundamentally symbolic nature, the basis of which is the trace left on the sand by animals, plants and humans. An arc of circle can represent and signify the mark left by a man sitting on the ritual site. The intense red color was rendered thanks to the particular care that it received: anointed with grease and ochre after each ceremony, they were preciously wrapped and protected by a tapa, or an animal skin and kept in a secret place until the next ritual. A highly symbolic object, the churinga would embody another form of the Self detached from the self. Each member of the community would have had at least one in the pertalchera of his totem, man or woman, but only the initiated men could see and handle them. Beautiful copy of an intense bright red with a rich decoration of engraved patterns. Lot in temporary importation and subject to a fee of 5.5% to be paid by the buyer in addition to the selling expenses and the auction price.
