Tapa Siapo mamanu Archipelago of Samoa Chinese... - Lot 34 - De Baecque et Associés
Tapa Siapo mamanu Archipelago of Samoa Chinese mulberry (Broussonetia papyrifera) and vegetable dyes L. 183 cm l. 123 cm Provenance : Collected by an officer during the Second World War and brought back to the United States Acquired in the United States by the current owner, private collection, New Caledonia The siapo mamanu, rarer than the siapo elei, are not stamped with a die like the latter but decorated freehand on the initial white/cream sheet. The dimensions of this example attest that it is a lava lava type tapa, however the more Tongan motifs indicate that it would have been made for a Tongan islander. In the lateral friezes, a motif representing the stem of a yam appears, and six times that of a four-petal flower close to the "fata'o tui tonga".
