Ibedji Yoruba twin, Nigeria Wood, cowrie... - Lot 16 - De Baecque et Associés
Ibedji Yoruba twin, Nigeria Wood, cowrie shells, fabric, pigments H. 29 cm Linked to the cult of twins, called ere ibeji in the Yoruba language, ere meaning "sacred image" and ibi meaning "born" and eji "double", "duality", this statuette symbolizes prestige, wealth and fertility, and also guarantees the perpetuation of generations. These effigies, intimately and integrally integrated into daily life, gave rhythm to family life among the Yoruba. Considered as living beings, as the reincarnation of twin ancestors, the ere ibeji were subjected to codified rites, they were pampered, fed, cared for, oiled and washed. The face, narrow and stretched, with the characteristic features of the yoruba, pupils with bulging eyes pierced, scarred cheeks, thick lips carried forward, is reinforced by a high conical headdress finely striated, enhanced with blue pigments. The body is concealed under an archaic cloak decorated with cowries, a symbol and promise of wealth.
