Dogon male head, Mali Wood H. 38 cm Provenance... - Lot 9 - De Baecque et Associés
Dogon male head, Mali Wood H. 38 cm Provenance : Paul and Jacqueline Canfère collection acquired from Jean-Michel Huguenin (according to oral information from descendants). Mainly settled in the wooded savannahs of southwestern Burkina Faso, the Lobi territory extends somewhat into Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana. Coming from the East after crossing the Mouhoum River (formerly the Black Volta) at the end of the 18th century, the populations linked by successive migrations are related and constitute the "Lobi branch" numbering about 450,000 people. Lobi sculpture was discovered late, in the 1950s. They do not have masks, but rather "bateba" figures and heads atop a stake planted in the ground. They embody representations of ancestors or nature spirits, genies. The half-closed almond-shaped eyes under slightly raised eyelids intensify their range. The face is imbued with serenity and deep tranquility. The straight nose with protruding wings supports the plane of the cheeks, announcing a narrow and closed mouth with hemmed lips. The angular jaw is clearly defined all around, accentuating the massive strength of the face. The male figure, elegantly coiffed, with a shell in relief topped by a sagittal ridge. The whole ends with a long neck.
