Manuscript - QUINET (Edgar). BROU, LAST GOTHIC... - Lot 356 - De Baecque et Associés
Manuscript - QUINET (Edgar). BROU, LAST GOTHIC CHURCH. In-4° of 13 pages, modern blue cardboard. Very beautiful text on the church of Brou signed and dated December 4, 1834, with numerous erasures and corrections in ink. Edgar Quinet, born in Bourg-en-Bresse in 1803, wrote it as an introduction to Gabriel de Moyria's poem, L'Église de Brou (Bourg, 1835). " ... The Art of the Middle Ages, abandoned and dying, gathered itself in a last effort, and built for itself its tomb in the church of Brou. It was there that he deposited his last thought in the soil of France, and that he laid himself in the coffin. Ah, may the marble mourners who surround Marguerite's tomb never wipe away their tears! Because, it is not only the Duchess and the Duke of Savoy who sleep there in this coffin. It is a thousand years past; it is the old faith, it is the old love; it is the dust of all the fallen beliefs, it is the lost tradition, it is the song of the last minstrel!
