Spanish school (Viceroyalty of Naples?), late 16th century - Lot 2
Spanish school (Viceroyalty of Naples?), late 16th century Virgin Mary or Immaculate Conception High relief in polychrome and gilded wood H. 110 cm Accidents and missing parts S&C This very beautiful Virgin in prayer, with her hands joined, her posture in accentuated contrapposto and placing her foot on the head of a small angel, represents the Immaculate Conception, a theme strongly exploited by theologians in the medieval period and raised to the status of dogma in the 19th century. The supporters of the Counter-Reformation took up the subject at the end of the 16th century and spread it widely, particularly in Spain during the Golden Age. This work shows various influences: the hairstyle and the hair with wavy and sparse strands, the elongated neck and the face with stretched out eyes are reminiscent of a rather Italian style, while the decoration with floral motifs on the painted or gilded clothes is more traditionally associated with the Spanish style. It is possible that this sculpture was made by an artist who worked in the Kingdom of Naples, then under the rule of the Spanish Habsburgs. The viceroyalty was considered one of the art capitals of the Spanish Empire in the 16th century.
