French work, mid-19th century. Gross weight : 8 g The historicism of the 19th century owes much to romanticism. Breaking with the religion of Antiquity, Romanticism multiplied the sources of inspiration, rediscovering with enthusiasm the Middle Ages. This neo-Gothic adventure is explained by a need for poetry, imagination and the picturesque. The jewelers found their inspiration in the novels of Walter Scott, who described a high medieval fantasy. The Neo-Gothic style was most popular during the July Monarchy; Victor Hugo published Notre-Dame-de-Paris (1831); jewelers translated this language into goldsmithing and chasing, creating a decorative repertoire from Gothic iconography.
