Paris, Weber, 1973, described and reproduced under number 130, page 132 This work is the fourth in the rare series of Masques de théâtre, which has only five variations Provenance: Michelle and Pierre Fagot Collection, gift from Henri Creuzevault to his daughter and son-in-law. The creative abundance of Jean Dubuffet is without equal in the second half of the twentieth century. The artist acting with total creative freedom channeled by an extreme rigor in the realization of his works and the organization of his work, proceeds by series, exhausting the creative potential of an idea, a theme, a technique, a medium or a material while obviously allowing himself to come and go. From 1962 begins the very ambitious cycle of L'Hourloupe, facetious denomination which gathers very varied creations, passing from the monumental environments as La Closerie Falbala (1971-1973) to La Tour aux figures (1968-1985), to the alive spectacle following the example of Coucou Bazar (1973), without forgetting paintings, drawings and sculptures, characterized by the presence of three essential colors, red, blue and white, increasingly punctuated by stripes or hatchings. In the register of the essential sculpture in the cycle of L'Hourloupe, Jean Dubuffet elaborates a totally innovative technique by working with totally synthetic materials, polyester, epoxy or even polystyrene. The very short suite of Masques de Théâtre, comprising only five creations, follows the completion of the Cabinet Logologique which occupied the artist from August 1967 to February 1969, a meditative place now located in the heart of La Closerie Falbala. These astonishing figures are reminiscent of the seven monumental characters conceived at the end of 1967, praticables prefiguring the ballet Coucou Bazar, but undeniably possess their own autonomy, which it does not seem incongruous to interpret as a catalog of expressive figures, whose plastic variety evokes the famous masks of the Noh theater. This sculpture is the third of this suite of five to be offered at public auction by De Baecque & associés, following the success of Masque de théâtre II, auctioned on December 11, 2019, and Masque de théâtre I, auctioned on November 19, 2021, these two previous sculptures coming from the collection of Colette Creuzevault.
