Paris, Charles-Antoine Jombert, 1737-1753. 2 parts of [10]-12-[4]-412 ; [8]-423-[1]-28 ; [8]-14-[2]-412-31-[1] ; [2]-8-480-[40] pages bound in 4 volumes in-4°, fawn calf, spine ribbed and decorated, red edges (period binding). First edition of this vast work, one of the best on civil mechanics, whose intaglio illustration consists of 2 frontispieces, 8 headpieces and 219 folded plates. The author exposes the principles of mechanics, the description and calculation of various kinds of mills for sawing (wheat, wood, marble, gunpowder manufacture...), as well as machines for raising water and all the ways of conducting and distributing it. The portrait is missing, as in most copies. Bindings very worn, covers damaged, corners dull, light rings, some handwritten annotations from the period. (Brunet I, 740).
