In-12 of 31-[1]-286 pages, fawn calf, triple gilt fillet with gilt arms in the centre of the boards, spine ribbed and decorated, red edges (period binding). First edition of the first French translation by the abbé Morellet, of this founding treatise of modern criminal law. The work, which stirred up the opinion in all Europe, had innumerable editions and was translated into all languages. Beccaria spoke out against arbitrary arrests and torture, and provoked the establishment of the jury; Voltaire considered this treatise to be the code of humanity, and all legislators have been inspired by it.
