Ain - SECULARIZATION AND STATUTES of the... - Lot 269 - De Baecque et Associés
Ain - SECULARIZATION AND STATUTES of the noble chapter of Neuville les Dames en Bresse. Lyon, Valfray, 1756. In folio of [2]-188 pages, marbled calf, spine with ornate nerves (period binding). Details of the charges and scales of income followed by the new statutes of the Abbey granted by Louis XIV in 1755. The King had granted the canonesses of Neuville the title of Countess and they had to prove five generations of nobility of name and arms. They were allowed to wear a cross in the image of Saint Catherine, suspended from the neck by a blue ribbon, and put in a sling. Dressed in black, they wore a long coat bordered with ermine on top of their ordinary habit. A COPY THAT BELONGED TO MADAME BERBIS, CANONESS AND COUNTESS OF NEUVILLE. 2 manuscript pieces of the period are bound at the end. From the library of Joseph Balloffet, historian of Beaujolais (bookplate). Covers missing otherwise a good copy.
