LANCRE (Pierre de). Le Livre des princes contenant plusieurs notables discourses, pour l'instruction des Rois, Empereurs et Monarques. Paris, by Nicolas Buon, 1617. In-4° of [24]-807-1bl.-[32] pages, fawn calf on wood, boards decorated with a frame and a large cold lace, traces of clasps (period binding). First edition of an authentic treatise on flattery, dedicated and addressed to the young King Louis XIII to prevent him from falling into the traps of vile flatterers and courtiers. Pierre de Lancre (1553-1631), or more precisely Pierre de Rosteguy de Lancre, was a councillor in the Bordeaux parliament. Appointed by Henry IV to eradicate witchcraft in the Basque country, he became infamous for having more than 500 people burned and for his Traité de l'inconstance des démons published in 1612. Sporadic pitting, small lack of a cap. (Brunet III, 810).
