George SAND
George SAND. L.A.S. to the singer Pauline Viardot. Nohant, 25 Oct. 1850. 1 p. in-8. Nice letter to "her daughter", recommending Marie Laurent's husband, the baritone Pierre Laurent. "Dear daughter, I ask you to hear Mr Laurent, winner of the Conservatoire in the 1840 competition, and a distinguished artist who has acquired an honourable position in the leading provincial theatres. I do not have the pleasure of knowing him, but you know his wife [the actress Marie Laurent (1825-1904)], you wept to tears at the touching and noble simplicity of Madeleine Blanchet, in the little play Le Champi, which you also loved. I told you about her, I told you that she was off the stage and that you saw her on the stage. I would be happy and grateful if you could be useful to her husband and help her to settle in Paris where she is fixed by her engagements. So please grant her an interview and I will thank you with a thousand kisses. Your mother. G. S.". Pierre Laurent died soon after, in 1852. Marie Laurent played the role of Madeleine Blanchet in François le Champi by George Sand, a play that premiered on November 23, 1849, at the Odéon. George Sand had said about it: " Mme Laurent created the type of the honest and good woman, of the mother at the same time austere and tender; never has a role been less played, never has it been better felt ". Pauline Viardot will audition Pierre Laurent on November 21.
