Lucien PISSARRO (1863-1944)
Lucien PISSARRO (1863-1944), painter, oldest son of Camille. L.A.S. to his mother and father. Epping (Essex, England), 7 October 1893. 4 pp. in-8. Very beautiful letter to his parents about his artistic projects, written the day before the birth of his only daughter, Orovida Camille Pissarro. He first addresses his mother (3 pages). "Yesterday night, Esther was taken by the first symptoms of childbirth []. I am worried but I hope that everything will be all right []. I am very annoyed that Dad is worried. How could he, who has always been so brave? Would he let himself go? []. I am working as much as I can, I will be able to send some paintings to Paris in a while and maybe I will start selling some. I have an etching coming out in the next Dial, I have exhibited my woodwork at Arts & Craft, I have the prospect of another exhibition soon at the Grafton Gallerie as an etching and painting. You will say to me, this is all very nice, but it doesn't bring in much money - that's true - but what can I do about it? One thing George and I often think about is furniture! But you need a little capital to have it made []. Luce is starting to sell, he lives meagrely, but he lives from his painting, in a few years it will be my turn []. For the moment, I am working hard, and inside I have confidence that it will come []. Georges is much calmer, he works, that helps him get over his sad ideas, he really wants to do another series of etchings for the Grafton Gallerie exhibition []". Then he addresses his father. "My dear father []. I have sent you the proofs to be coloured, tell me what you think of them and also, the colour etching correctly printed. I enclose with this letter a proof of a woodcut I drew two years ago and never finished []".
