Interesting Nicolaus Blanchet fortepiano... - Lot 83 - De Baecque et Associés
Interesting Nicolaus Blanchet fortepiano 167 rue de la verrerie in Paris year 1801 (on cartouche calligraphied in ink on the window above the keyboard), lemon tree front, mahogany cabinet and mahogany veneer with bronze decoration. Made in 1801. Keyboard of 62 keys in ebony and ivory for a range of 5 octaves, from E1 to F5. The Blanchet family is a famous family of harpsichord makers active in Paris from the end of the 17th century until the 18th century. They were specialists in the transformation, known as ravalement, of Flemish harpsichords from the Rückers and brought Parisian harpsichord making to the highest point of perfection. Nicolas Blanchet, born in Reims in 1660, was the first member of the family to become famous. He moved to Paris where he founded a prosperous workshop specializing in the making of harpsichords and spinet instruments. He died in 1731. Thereafter Armand François Nicolas BLANCHET (1763 - 1818), husband of DESPAU Marie Louise (ca. 1751 - 1832), father of Nicolas BLANCHET, only son, is the partner of Jean ROLLER (1826)(10) under the name ROLLER & BLANCHET, and then there is Armand's grandson, and Nicolas's son: Pierre Armand Charles BLANCHET (April 7, 1819 - ?) founds his own firm in 1852. To support the tension of the strings, the sounding board is made of a wooden frame, called a dam, on which the sounding board is placed. The sounding board shows cracks and important traces of humidity. The soundboard is in good condition but shows traces of corrosion. The pegbox at the bottom of the keyboard and above the soundboard, into which steel pegs are driven, also show traces of corrosion. All the hammers and dampers are also present but need to be revised. Soundboard sunken on the left side. Pedalboard missing. Piano is a good basis for restoration
