CADIERE - GIRARD (Trial). General collection... - Lot 23 - De Baecque et Associés
CADIERE - GIRARD (Trial). General collection of documents concerning the trial between the Demoiselle Cadière, of the city of Toulon; and Father Girard, Jesuit. (The Hague), unnamed, 1731. 2 volumes bound in 1 volume in folio, brown calf, decorated spine with nerves (binding of the time). A very complete collection, full of additional documents from the trial, often printed in Aix. The 2 tables announce 36 pieces, whereas our copy contains 52. It is a detailed account of the relationship between Father Girard and his penitent Catherine Cadière, an 18-year-old girl of surprising beauty. This affair "in which the most scandalous hysterical-mystical acts, the most revolting impurities, defy the most austere pen"; it gave rise to one of the most famous erotic novels, "Thérèse philosophe". Epiderminations on the dishes, missing headdresses. Modern ex-libris by Maurice Foucault. (Caillet, 1887) (Gay II, 985-6).
