BUFFON. General and particular natural history with the description of the King's cabinet. Paris, Imprimerie Royale, 1770-1789. 39 volumes in-4°, marbled calf, decorated spine with nerves, spine glued (contemporary binding). "Natural History, without a doubt, belongs to the Age of Enlightenment.... Buffon also reveals himself to be a precursor; he illuminates with penetrating views the new avenues in which science, after him, will engage: Ecology, Ethology, Biogeography, Paleontology, Comparative Anatomy, Transformism. His ideas about man and the human species make him an astonishingly modern mind". (In French in the text n°152). The set is illustrated with 1493 FLOORS OF WHICH 362 ARE FINALLY COLOURED AT THE TIME. It is also decorated with 12 maps and paintings, Buffon's portrait and a frontispiece, all uniformly bound.
