Large tripod container Nicoya Culture of Influence, Ometepe Island, Nicaragua End of Period IV, 1-1500 AD. H. 30 cm - D. 38.5 cm Thick, reddish-brown and dark brown ceramic (old leather colour), glossy surface. On three zoomorphic feet, representing the heads of alligators with powerful openwork jaws, rests a large cauldron with a conical bottom decorated on the sides with two protomes with jaguar heads. Caught in two rectangular registers, two stylised bird profiles in slight relief. Slightly truncated conical neck with a flared and circular rim. Visible restorations on the feet, accidents and surface wear. Ometepe is an island located in Lake Nicaragua. There are two volcanoes on the island: the Conception and the Maderas. Many pre-Columbian burials have been unearthed in this place. This rare container was discovered on this island and it can be linked to the Nicoya culture of Costa Rica. Provenance: This large vase was on display from 1938 to 1975 at the Musée de l'Homme in Paris on permanent loan from the current owner's family who resided in Nicaragua at the beginning of the 20th century.
