Louis MARCOUSSIS (1878-1941) The bunch of grapes, 1926 Fixed under monogrammed glass and dated 1926 in the centre right H. 52,5 cm L. 44,5 cm (at sight) HVS Provenance: Sale of the collection "L'oeil clair", Paris, Hôtel Drouot, 5 November 1937, lot 114 (repr.) (800 fr) under the title "La colombe poignardée". Galerie Zak, rue de l'Abbaye in Paris. Michelin collection, Paris, then by descent. The "l'oeil clair" collection was built up by a group whose "subtle" mode of operation is described as follows in the 1937 catalogue: "For seven years, lovers of painting came together to form one of the most complex and subtle societies one can conceive of. The Sweepstake is only a crude combination beside what they had imagined. Every year their small group elected three members from among its members, who were given a free hand, so to speak, to buy works by modern painters, at sales, from galleries, or directly from artists, until the membership fund was exhausted. Then the purchased paintings were put into a lottery between all the members of the Society. Moreover, the winners did not become the owners of the paintings, but only, as it were, the temporary usufructuaries, since each year the deposit from which their views benefited was renewed. At the end of a certain period of time it was understood that they would return these loans and that the collection thus constituted would be put up for sale. "
