[CITRI WATCHES (Samuel)] History of the conquest... - Lot 44 - De Baecque et Associés
[CITRI WATCHES (Samuel)] History of the conquest of Florida by the Spaniards under Ferdinand de Soto. Paris, Denys Thierry, 1685. In-12 of [24]-300 pages, brown calf, decorated spine, (contemporary binding). Original edition of the French translation, very rare. "Born in Villanueva around 1495, Fernando de Soto accompanied Ponce de Leon to Peru, where he made his fortune and lived quietly in Seville when he had the ambition to conquer Florida. He gathered a troop of adventurers, armed himself four ships and embarked in San Lucar on May 12, 1539. Nowhere did he find the gold he had come for, and after a thousand labours and a thousand useless cruelties he perished miserably on the banks of the Mississippi on June 15, 1542" (Rothschild, II, 1981). Very good copy in its first binding.
