Portrait of Benoît Meunier, Baron de Saint-Clair (1769-1845) Oil on canvas H. 115 cm - L. 90 cm HVS Tears and Restorations Period frame in wood and gilded stucco Son of a cabaret maker, the young Meunier joined the revolutionary armies and later rose through the ranks of the Grand Army, becoming famous in the countryside of Italy, Germany, Prussia and Poland. His most famous feat of arms was to have taken 600 prisoners at the Battle of Montebello under the command of Marshal Lannes. During the Hundred Days, Meunier, then Lieutenant General, was part of the Jura Observation Army. The Restoration will earn him a retirement from which he left in 1830, date on which he became Superior Commander of the departments of Isère and Hautes-Alpes. The model appears here bearing the medal of Commander of the Legion of Honour, which he obtained on 20 April 1831 after a brilliant career, he retired from military life in 1834 and died in Lyon in 1845.
