THE MARCEL CARBONEL COLLECTION
Marcel Carbonel, an emblematic figure from Marseilles, is intimately linked to the history of the santon. His life of aesthetic passion and technical research made him one of the symbols of the santon-making craft, becoming the first of his peers to receive the Meilleur Ouvrier de France award in 1961.
In parallel with his flourishing production, Marcel Carbonel began in 1935 to assemble a private collection representative of the santon arts.
Raw or baked clay, breadcrumbs, wood, plaster, glued paper, ceramics, wax or spun glass... the most varied techniques are used in this collection of delicately crafted figurines of all sizes, from the "santon-puce" to majestic church santons, estimated at up to 3,000 euros, giving rise to an ensemble of great variety of expression.
From Naples to Marseilles, from the pioneers of the 18th century to the virtuoso craftsmen of today, the Marcel Carbonel collection draws its inspiration from ancient and popular sources of all times and origins, and pays tribute to all those men and women with hands of clay and gold who have worked and work every day to create the magic of the crib.
Please note: to best convey the spirit of his collection, Marcel Carbonel's and his grandson Philippe Renoux's mentions and comments on the works in his collection have been preserved and quoted in quotation marks in the description of the objects concerned.
